Project Statement “Successful public spaces hold the promise of unpredictable moments, shifting and multiple meanings, diversity and ambivalence. Such places tempt their users into occupation, colonization, and perhaps even the creation of collective memory. Paradoxically, the existence of successful public spaces indicates that the development of individual networks in today’s evolving urban field has not led to fragmentation. On the contrary, such spaces turn everyone into actor and spectator alternatively, and present conditions that enable different groups to attach their own meanings to a place, thereby providing new perspectives onto other groups and enabling reflection on one’s own position. “ Hans Ophuis, Topus International Journal of Landscape Architecture Edition 39/2002 - Click here to download the full text (pdf) This idea of public space as an inclusive theatre of surpise and community construction is only sometimes achieved by town planners, developers and architects. Modern purpose built urban landscapes tend to limit what’s off purpose and it is in that sense that public access and community ownership are two entirely different concepts. Other factors such as car traffic have had a massive effect on children’s play and general street life as a grass roots celebration of neighbourhood. Global Player investigates these issues through street play; testing public spaces and constructing moments of temporary community ownership.
