Project Description

D-Tour: thoughts looking sidewards  (2018)

Single channel video with crowd sourced soundtrack

Context: writing on public transport, experimental video, collective creativity, noticing the people and things around us

THE WORK

We invited travellers on the D bus route in Exeter to contribute short writings, musings and poetries about their journey. By answering 6 creative writing questions, and offering them for voice recording to other passengers, their thoughts formed the inspiration & soundtrack for a new video art work made by Blind Ditch. All contributions were anonymous.

Photography by Volkhardt Müller & Tashy Hughes

WHAT WAS SAID

“Poetic, sombre – I really liked the linking of the mundane nature of cosmopolitan transportation to more profound underlying themes”

Audience member

“The link between community and necessity – it’s all part of keeping Exeter ‘ticking’”

Audience member

“Really liked the plethora of conversations… different thoughts”

Audience member

“Bus thoughts are almost similar to pillow talks… day dreaming…”

Audience member

“It was a lot of fun. It made the journey go so much faster.”

D-Bus writer

“Really enjoyed how you take something so simple, something not many people think about… and enlarge it to encompass a whole range of different themes… community… ethnicities, city idiosyncrasies, cognitive cues…”

Audience member

“The bus became a destination in itself rather than a means to an end. A place for contemplation…”

Audience member

“It felt like we were moving”

Audience member

“What an innovative way of exploring journeys and movement. So immersive and an interesting perspective on different people.”
