Project Description

Tail Biting/Sentimental Journey  (2010)

Performance for an ending. Dartington College of Arts, Devon.

Context: memory and nostalgia, old media, loops, restructuring and redundancy, friendships and networks disassembling

THE WORK

A durational performance of loops… old scripts, unused texts, half remembered scores, media fragments and other people’s memories… staged for an afternoon in the old Programmes Office at Dartington. The space had previously been a student common room, and then the post-graduate centre where some of us had written our Masters thesis. It’s final use was as the administrative heart of the college where the creative labour of students was managed through the assessment process – documents and commentary on art as life moving through the hands of a lively and generous office staff.
Our performance was part of a curated programme called Shaking Hands With Ghosts alongside artists: Simon Persighetti, Kirsten Lavers, Karen Christopher, Jerome Fletcher, Roger Bourke, Rob Gawthrop, Melanie Thompson, Bob Budd, Sue Palmer & Maritea Daehlin, Propeller

WHAT WAS SAID

“When I heard first that Dartington College was closing it’s doors in summer 2010 it seemed like a long way away, then a few months ago I realized it was very soon and I knew that I needed to mark it’s passing in some way, in my way…”

Melanie Thompson, Shaking Hands With Ghosts Curator

“Dartington is so much about its location and whilst there we all went native. We were fully able to indulge in it all, the landscape, the Bauhaus architecture, the hot south Devon sun, and the art. This was vital to our work. When I hear the current talk of Dartington relocating, I feel like it will somehow be robbed of its soul.”

Stan's Cafe

“What would remain, if the college were to be forced out, would be merely a pleasant rural environment for conferences and so on, like so many others around the country, but it would no longer have the resonance that it has at present”.
